A major new sports and recreation destination is moving forward at Nathan Benderson Park.
Sarasota County commissioners received an updated look at the planned indoor multi-sport complex and boathouse on August 25, with construction expected to begin as early as this fall.
Plans include approximately 100,000 square feet of flexible indoor court space with the potential to accommodate:
- 8 basketball courts
- 16 volleyball courts
- Up to 30 pickleball courts
- Wrestling, martial arts and other sporting events
- A new boathouse with direct water access
- Training, recovery and community-event spaces
The goal is to complete the facility before Nathan Benderson Park hosts the combined Senior, Under-23 and Under-19 World Rowing Championships in August 2028.
Beyond major competitions, the facility could bring more year-round recreation, community programming and sports tourism to the Sarasota and Lakewood Ranch area.
