A major new master-planned development is moving forward in Sarasota County.

On September 8, Sarasota County commissioners unanimously advanced Palmer East, a proposed development encompassing approximately 2,350 acres east of Interstate 75 near the State Road 681 interchange.

Current plans include:

  • Approximately 5,700 homes
  • Nearly 1.5 million square feet of commercial, office and light-industrial space
  • A mixed-use town center
  • Space intended for new employers and corporate offices
  • Up to 1,000 residences within the town-center area
  • A long-term development timeline spanning approximately 20 years

The proposed town center could include as much as 600,000 square feet of commercial space, 630,000 square feet of office space and 250,000 square feet of light-industrial space.

This does not mean construction is beginning immediately. The town-center portion now moves to the Florida Department of Commerce for review and must return to Sarasota County commissioners for another vote. Development will also depend partly on future improvements to the Interstate 75 and State Road 681 interchange.

Even at this early stage, this is an important look at where Sarasota County’s next major wave of homes, businesses and employment opportunities could take shape.
