A long-vacant grocery store property in Sarasota is moving closer to a major transformation following a new approval from city commissioners.

The former Winn-Dixie site at Midtown Plaza is slated to be redeveloped into a mixed-use project featuring a 145-room hotel and 91 apartments, bringing new activity to a prominent commercial property.

The proposal also includes 23 apartments designated as attainable housing, an element intended to provide additional housing opportunities as Sarasota continues to grow.

The City Commission’s approval is a significant milestone for the project, particularly after the proposal previously received a denial from the city’s Planning Board.

For residents, the redevelopment could mean a new hotel, additional housing options and a different look for a property that has remained vacant for years. It also reflects the ongoing changes taking place along Sarasota’s established commercial corridors.

The project has received city approval, but that does not mean construction has started. A groundbreaking or completion date has not been confirmed.
